Jorge Lorenzo faces a race to be fit for the Czech MotoGP after breaking two metatarsal bones in a huge crash at Laguna Seca.
The Spaniard fell victim to a 'high-side' on the first lap and was catapulted over his handlebars, suffering fractures to the third and fifth metatarsals in his left foot.
The incident was eerily reminiscent of one suffered in Shanghai in May, which resulted in chipped bones in both ankles.
On that occasion the Spaniard continued to race throughout the weekend despite being unable to walk. However, the foot injury leaves him unable to ride and raises the possibility he may not recover in time for the start of the Brno weekend on August 15.
"My tyre was not up to temperature, I lost the rear and the next thing I knew I was in the gravel, with pain in my foot," said Lorenzo.
"It is one more crash, one more injury and it's another moment that I have to forget as soon as possible. I need to look forward. I am so sad but now I must concentrate on the fact that I have a whole month before Brno in order to be fit and to be able to race in good shape."
Team boss Daniele Romagnoli added: "Let's hope for a good rest for Jorge; we wish him a good recovery and we look forward to seeing him come back at Brno ready to fight again with the top riders."
